Patrick grew up in disadvantaged circumstances in Kuala Lumpur, where he relied on hard work and education to pursue a better future. He saw the United States as a land of promise and opportunity. His life took a dramatic turn when, as a high school student, he met an admissions counselor from the College of Wooster.
Patrick immigrated to the United States in 1984 and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics in 1988 from the College of Wooster. He proudly became an American citizen in 1990, renouncing his Malaysian citizenship.
